Sudden Death Policy
This guidance is written to support staff in the nursery to manage a sudden traumatic event such as the death or a serious injury of a young child.
The following actions will need to be taken in the immediate aftermath and during subsequent days.
- Contact emergency services and administer first aid as appropriate
- Contact parents/ carers of children directly involved.
- Remove the children to a safe place
- Allocate roles and responsibilities to staff . Likely to include someone to:
- Care for the children
- Respond to telephone calls
- Meet arriving parents/ carers
- Prepare information for parents/ carers
- Contact Ofsted
- Access further support
- Comfort and reassure the children
- Restablish routines(as far as is possible)
- Support staff to manage their own reactions and those of the children and parents
- Inform other parents/ carers of what has happened as appropriate.

- Collect and record information about the incident from all sources establishing the following:
- Exact nature of the incident
- When and where it occurred
- Who was involved and witnessed events
- Nature and extent of injuries
- Location of all involved ( e.g. what hospital they are in)
- A log of all info as it occurs, with times.
