Special Education Needs
The method of assessing any special educational needs of a child commences the day they first attend Playaway Day Nursery. Every child is allocated to a specific member of staff who becomes their key person and who is then responsible for monitoring and recording the progress of that child. The key person will carry out an initial assessment of the child based on the guidelines provided by Julia Gaskell. Should the initial assessment indicate any special needs, whether they are educational or care, then the key person will inform Julia Gaskell.
Should any child be assessed as having special needs then Julia Gaskell will ensure appropriate support for that child in liaison with the child’s parent / carer, nurses, doctors, educational authorities and other specialist as appropriate (Early Years Action or Early Years Action Plus). It is also the responsibility of Julia Gaskell to ensure that adequate records are maintained of the child’s progress (an IEP) and to ensure that when the child leaves the nursery that the records are passed to the school or appropriate authority. A record will be kept on the personnel files of attendance of staff at special needs training courses and seminars and Julia Gaskell will also keep a diary record of all meetings they attend in respect to special needs matters.
Special Educational procedures are carried out as an integral part of this nursery’s operational plan.
When reviewing matters relating to SENCO consideration should in particular be given to:
- The Admissions Policy and procedure that appears under Section 3
- The Booking In Procedure that appears under Section 3
- The Parental Involvement Policy also under Section 3
- The Training Policy under Section 3
- Special equipment under Section 3
- Equal Opportunities under Section 3
- Annual Audit under Section 3
Compliments and complaints in respect to all special needs matters should first be discussed with Julia Gaskell. If the matter is not satisfactorily resolved, then it may be progressed through the nursery complaints procedure under Section 3.
